Cricketer Virat Kohli and acting professional Anushka Sharma are unpatriotic because they didn’t get hitched in India, a BJP legislator in Madhya Pradesh said on Wednesday, angering the opposition.
Launching a government design in Guna, 214 kilometres north of Bhopal, local MLA Pannalal Shakya said Kohli didn’t deserve to be called a youth icon because he hitched in Italy.
The couple acquired hitched in a Tuscan resort previously this month in a closely guarded wedding ceremony and shared photographs of the wedding on social advertising. The cricketer and professional are among India’s most popular stars and stories of these relationship have made headlines for years.
“They received money and popularity in India however they missed any appropriate destination to marry on the land where Lord Ram got hitched,” Shakya told a gathering. “They can be unpatriotic for getting married overseas.”
Later, speaking to Hindustan Times, he confirmed his commentary and added that he was upset with the couple.
His remarks triggered disorders from the opposition, who demanded an apology and argued that the MLA acquired no to question the options of individuals.
“Being a liable legislator, Shakya shouldn’t have given such a statement… Does the BJP innovator want others to ask him to choose the venue of marriage? Who’s he to comment over superstars’ choice of place for relationship. What kind of message they want to give by insulting a super star who’s the pride in our country?” asked state Congress main spokesperson KK Mishra.
