Ronan leads Irish stars at Golden Globes BY SAEED NASIR

 

Saoirse Ronan is leading the way for the Irish nominees at the Golden Globes tomorrow night time.

The Carlow celebrity (23) is nominated for Best Actress in a Musical or Comedy at the gorgeous awards ceremony on her behalf role as Christine McPherson in ‘Lady Bird’.

She will go to the service with ‘Lady Parrot’ director Greta Gerwig – and both women will wear black to get the Time’s Up movement, aimed at promoting women who have brought forward intimate assault cases in the wake of the Harvey Weinstein scandal.

“It’s the most important thing,” she said.

“For all of these people, men and women, to have the ability to come together and use their effect and start the discussion and raise awareness and support anyone who’s going through or questioning their basic safety when they’re on collection.

“I believe it’s needed. It’s very helpful and it’s really paramount that this happens now.”

Ronan has received rave reviews on her behalf role in the film and is also thought to be a significant contender for a nomination for Best Celebrity at the Academy Honours.

Fellow Irish actress Caitriona Balfe (38) has received a nomination for Best Actress in a Dilemma TV series for her role in ‘Outlander’.

The Dubliner stepped out at Los Angeles’ Chateau Marmont Hotel before this week to wait ‘W Magazine’s pre-Golden Globes party.

Playwright Martin McDonagh has been honoured with a nomination for Best Director and Best Screenplay for his critically acclaimed criminal offense film ‘Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri’.

McDonagh (47) also produced the film which has received a complete of six nominations, including for Best Picture.

 

Nora Twomey (46), from Co Cork, one of the founders of the Oscar-nominated ‘Cartoon Saloon’, has seen her first single feature, ‘The Breadwinner’, get a nomination in the Motion Picture, Animated category.

It tells the storyline associated with an Afghan young lady who dresses like a son so that she can provide on her behalf family. Twomey received the backing of Hollywood heavyweights for the film, with A-list actress Angelina Jolie portion as an executive producer.
