When Mani Ratnam declared Chekka Chivantha Vaanam with a stellar superstar cast boasting of titles like Prakash Raj and Arvind Swami, admirers expected it to be another basic like Thalapathy. The truck for the film, however, implies that it is nowhere near it, except as it pertains to focussing on relationships.

The trailer starts with Prakash Raj who performs the role of an mafia kingpin, Senapaty. He is contacted by another businessman who wonders what will happen to the business when Senapaty is forget about. He asks, “Who will go to after you? Which of your sons?” Arvind Swami’s Varadan feels he is a good choice because he has already manages the ‘family business’. He also seems that his brothers are ‘educated and may well not want to do such soiled work’. But shock, surprise; both of them want a piece of the pie.

Just when you thought that the film is approximately three brothers and how they fight each other to achieve the number one position, Mani throws in a twist in the form of Rasool, performed by Vijay Sethupathi. The brothers may have their dissimilarities, however when it comes to an outside make trying to damage them, they join hands. If not, why would the three even spend time mutually during car chases?

At first glance, Rasool appears like a corrupt cop. He’s Varadan’s oldest good friend and his fellow cops have labelled him a rogue already. But is he? Because by the end of the trailer, it boils right down to Varadan being betrayed by Rasool. He even says, “Have you got an old friend. In the event that you do, do not trust him.”

Aditi Rao Hydari is the another twist. She is a reporter who’s in the beginning seen questioning who Senapaty really is but eventually ends up becoming Varadan’s mistress. The duality of interactions and exactly how each unravels when confronted with difficult situations is exactly what Chekka Chivatha Vaanam is focused on.

The film is jointly made by Madras Talkies and Lyca Productions and has music composed by AR Rahman, and the film is slated to release on September 28. In addition, it stars Jayasudha, Arvind Swami, Jyothika, Arun Vijay, Aishwarya Rajesh, Silambarasam and Dayana Erappa.
